Ukiyu-e of Yoshiwara

Ukiyo-e of YOSHIWARA

Since around the middle of the Edo period, it had been the custom in Yoshiwara 吉原 to plant cherry trees in full bloom in the main street on March 1 every year, and to create a special row of cherry trees. Japanese kerria and lamps were set on ground and green bamboo fences were surrounding them.
Painter Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重 attempted to depict the row of cherry using the perspective drawing method with two vanishing points. He had seen the corner of building, where the perspective method started with the vanishing points on either side. In the center of the picture, the moon, first tree of the row and an Oiran 花魁 were gathered on the central axis.
